zmodem + crash recovery!!! *cheer* only way to go.... remember the good old days of 1200baud modems?Tongue nwwweeeeeer rorwrobblewrworwrrobbleowrwrw <- impression of 1200 baud

I heard of FXP before but didn't believe the guy. (this was a few years ago when it was probably still making way into the mainstream) It seemed rather insecure, still does somewhat but sure makes some jobs convenient!

Yeah, but that was back in the day or maybe one image per page! Crazy LOL

The slowest my modem ever was, is a 28.8kbps, before the 56k v90 ones came out.....and guess what....I'm STILL on a 56k V90 modem Frown (UK are a bit behind in fast DSL services at the moment, at least where I live).

No images at that time. I had a DEC VT-100 terminal, later upgraded to a VT-220 terminal. As long as you didn't mind watching the TEXT lines write themselves across the screen it was pretty zippy! Cool

My first PC modem was 9600 baud in 1993 or so, a decade after those lovely DEC terminals.

Now you want to talk antiques? I still have my family's first PC, an Exidy Sorcerer II which I think were actually more popular in the UK than they were here in the US. Best feature? The software ROM packs that were hard cards mounted inside of old 8-track tape shells!!

Went looking for pictures of one and found this great web site:

I still keep a terminal kicking around. Great thing about them is that their boot up time is basically the length of time it takes to warm the thing up. They're also really quiet...I used to keep it beside my bed with a serial cable snaking into the next room just in case I need a pad Angelic

Z80s were nice chips back then, but IBM cost cut and went with the 8086 which I think had a small bus capacity. I think I still have an old opcode book for them kicking around for both those chips somewhere, it's brutal working with such a small register set with opcodes that function on specific registers :p

First computer I played with was a TI-99FA with a Pac Man clone called Munch Man. http://www.old-computers.com/...r.asp?st=1&c=236 Cut my teeth on that thing making cheezy hangman clones Blush Got a tape drive for the thing too, used to start the load process and go to dinner.

TI 99-4A -> Apple II -> Mac Classic -> C64 -> Zenith XT -> P133 -> and onwards!

ewwwwwww, Radio Shack boy! (haha, love their electronics kits) Never really worked with them, they run on CP/M or something?

What iMac are you getting? The funky new desk lamp with complimentary cpu?

Yep, iLamp 17" flat screen job with DVD buring :)

Yeah the TRS-80 was CP/M from memory... though I had a card I plugged into my Apple ][ for CP/M as well.

EDIT: I am not really a radio shack fan... I wanted the Apple as soon as I found out about it!

You seen the new (launched last week?) twin processer Macs? With two video cards, too, so you can get a dual monitor setup, also comes with a super drive as standard (even two if you want) -- nice!

Very nice! I wish I could afford it. I think it would make an excellent graphics workstation.

It should take no time at all to render your POVray artworks Cool I've been tempted to get one myself, but I think those MS Tablets have been pulling me a fair bit more Tongue

HAHA :)

I've been going towards portability. Just recently I've managed to install linux on my ipaq 3850. Performs like a dream, only wish I had gcc and a portable targus keyboard to make code on the run. It has python so I've been playing with that language a bit. The on-screen keyboard is rather lousy though. (gave up on the Pocket PC OS... eg. media player would keep my microdrive busy all the time, killing my battery life. With python, I could copy the mp3 onto my flash and then play that copy... while the microdrive went into hibernation Wink)

I have never played with Python to date, but I think I want to.

Portable has served me well for the last 3.5 years (thats 3 1/2 not 35Angelic). I used a Dell insipron (192MbRam 15" LCD), and it was a great computer right up until the end. It died last week.

Portablity is great, especially for taking work home.

I find I am moving more to storing things online for safety (like you mentioned a few posts ago). Spread the code around, and you are less likely to lose it.

I think a porable keyboard would go a long way for coding... onscreen... hmmm.

Python is interesting, doesn't require block delimiters, instead your indentation describe what block you're in. Aside from that, it seems like it has a great set of libraries and it's surprisingly terse. I still prefer scripting in perl though :)

Anyways, since I work off a laptop most of the time, I'm frequently worried about theft. Especially since I don't live in the safest of areas. Shocked For your storage, do you use some sort of encryption on your files?

Far cry from ye olde days of bbs'ing when you had to stay on for hours to download a couple hundred K ;)

Re: [Aki] Look for FTP program In reply to
ZIP or plain old ARJ with encryption :)

As far as I know you can still only hack those by brute force methods. So pretty safe if you have a 10 digit mixed char password.

I understand what you mean about security. My dell is/was bios passworded, but that is a real issue when you forget the password yourself. There is no motherboard battery to unhook to reset the bios memory :)
