is there a way to make DBMan faster? After
to add about 5.000 records it really slows down.
Or is there a perl script which is similar
and is not flat-file based and therefore faster?

There is an SQL version of DBMan which will work with an SQL server. System requirements are:

1. Perl 5.004
2. DBI module.
3. SQL server (mysql recommended)
4. DBD driver for the above server.

It costs $350 US and includes setup and loading of any data you have into the database.
