In JPDeni's tutorial she uses $auth_signup = 1;* in some of the configurations. I don't understand the asterisk. When I put the asterisk in as shown I get an error message. Am I mis-reading this?

probably,
there's a closing " ; " so I guess that maybe she's pointing out to change 0 to 1 ...
LoisC will know for sure but you should be OK with just a 1 there

The asterisk is not needed for sure. I think it was added in the notes just to bring attention to that line and the related notes at the end or beginning of the tutorial.
