I used the automatic file definition to generate a new file. I carefully deleted the old default definition and pasted the new. I deleted all the records in the default file. When I call add, list all or anything that displays the record layout I get the default
layout. I am puzzled as to where the program is getting the layout as I deleted it. What is happening and how do I correct it?

In your default.cfg file, set

$db_auto_generate = 1;
