Dynamic SSI based on file name?

Dynamic SSI based on file name?
I've made so many modifications to this script, that I can't believe I can't figure out this one (well.. I'm stuck on 2.. but this is today's 'stuck' <G>), and I've been searching these forums for 2 days before jumping in to ask (as I'm sure I'm not the first).

I currently have my pages calling to an SSI file in a column I've placed on the RH side of the page.. but I would like the file to change on each page (if the file is in existence). Is there a way to setup (probably in site_html.pl) the ssi called to be based on file name? I know how to check for existence.. I'm just having problems determining how to set the file name in the first place..

i.e.: #include virtual="/ssi/$filename.txt" where $filename would be index, New.index, Cool.index, category.index, ID#, etc?

For those visually inclined: I currently call to a txt file 'better.txt' in my ssi dir, and it's placed in the right hand column of my page layout:

does my question make sense?<G>
