news mod
Hello all,

What news program if any, are you using with links?

I have looked at a couple of programs, and downloaded newspro from http://amphibian.gagames.com/newspro/

The program seems to be quite well though-out
and should be able to work with links and templates. However, I am far from being someone that would be able to create its mod.

Anyone for the taking????

Is anyone using news on their sites, besides trying to harvest it from other sites/portals???

It seems that there is a lack of responces to my previous post. Maybe I should mention that I am not trying to advertise a program, just trying to implement a way to include news with links.

Do you mean a way to write your own news articles which is dynamically displayed on the links site?

I am using news publisher at http://www.roosh.com/news_publisher which uses SSI. I just edit the cfg file for links to build .shtml files and put the tag pull the news txt file in my home.html template. Once you build the site, your home.html is now index.shtml. You can write news articles without building links since there it uses SSI.

Shawn,

There have been several posts about integrating news w/ links. Widgetz says he's done it, I believe. So far, newspro seems to be the one most referenced, so try searching on "newspro" --should turn up a few threads for you to check out.

Hi

I've done a DBMan mod which turns in into quite a powerful news database: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...es/Detailed/443.html

You can see it in action here: http://www.lizdavies.org where there is also Links running.

I'm going to do some more work on it as soon as I have sorted moving a load of sites from one ISP to another, when I move these sites I'll also get a on-line demo of it up.

I use I*Syndicate and Excite affiliate news on my site.

I haven't tried to harvest and push it off as my own (it's just as easy to get it this way).

Were you thinking of harvesting just the headlines or the entire news story as well?

That would build a pretty damn big database.

I am looking for something like news pro
but i would like that every news article to be generated on a new page and also
that you can upload and image or two with the article and that the image file is named automatically to corrispond with the article and uplaoded to a folder like images so as not to get too messy and also that the images are imbedden in the article some place.

and also that the headline are on a seperate page and also that they can be called (only the headlines not the articles) using ssi calls and placed in my home.html page in links so that they link directly!

If anyone can do this i would be very greatful!

I have no money all that went into the running of the site but i do have vouchers!

Chris,

I would be very interested in finding out more about what you have planned. Is it possible to have a similar sytem with the links? I don't know much about DBMan. One advantage with links is that you can have articles submitted/listed under different categories.

What I would like is for the user to be able to submit articles and then I as the admin/editor can go and validate/edit/post only appropriate articles. I am not sure if this is possible with the system you have now.

But that site looks great. I would like a bit more flexibility.

Chris,

I have modified Links to be a fairly decent news program. I made the following changes to make it work:

- Made the title a short description to be listed on category pages
- Linked to detailed pages where full story is listed
- Paste pre-made HTML into description field for story (allows for custom formating, images etc)
- Probably a few other things but it's been a few months since I made it

What I still lack that would make it work out much better :

- Switching the new and home pages. This would put a listing of the new articles on the first page people see, but still allow them to have a category breakdown to use.
- Having the links to the detailed page go through the hits counter to keep track of popularity. No sense tracking links away from site, there won't really be any.

If anyone can help with the above I would be happy to post my finished product for others to use. I would give an address for my current version but the domain has been down for 2 months (grrr). Will try and post on new server soon...

Oh... another thing that I am worried about is the links.db file size. After just adding 10 stories the file is already up to 20K so it's going to get big and slow fairly fast.

Unfortunately to keep all the stories searchable you have to keep them all in that one file.

Just a drawback to the system.

just grabbing news is easy...

i don't like it though..

i like grabbing news.. opening the link.. grabbing the content of the news.. and then make a new page on your server..

it's really easy.. i've done this when i parsed a directory and then parsed each subcategory.. hehehe..

I like that better because thats what the major newshubs do when they update every hour or so.

So is the major concensus here that it is not easy to parse the pages to grab the entire articles along with the headlines? Because I want to keep users on my site when they click on a headline...
Ideas?
