Yes I have gone through the forum and I have found the thread about link.db.bak. It didn't work.
I do seem to be having problems on this new server changing file permissions........my FTP client says the file was changed but looking at the x's and r's etc beside the file shows the file didn't change.
What can I do about that?

Make sure you have a file in the /data/ folder called links.db.bak. If you don't, make a file called that and upload to your data folder. Then CHMOD to 666.
