psswrd protect trouble

psswrd protect trouble
I have been through all the posts, I have been trying to set .htaccess on the admin page within the cgi-bin. I
have used Lockit, went to the german site and created htaccess files -put them in the links directory in the cgi-bin- where everything is- I have gone
through the forum as well as go to the tutorial for htaccess. I have been
with tech support on and off 4hrs at a time @ Interland.com where my site is
remotely hosted, they have no knowledge on how to password protect a
directory within the cgi-bin. (I just got off the phone with tier 3 tech support)
and when they try to set it it has failed to work, then proceeded to tell me that it is impossible to set htaccess on a Unix Server within the cgi-bin and to move the whole thing to the html directory where they know htaccess does work. Is this true? Will I have to make the unforsaken move?!! Please oh wise Links 2 veterans advice me on my next step!

I don't know what else to do. :(

They are blowing smoke...you can definitely use .htaccess/.htpasswd protection within sub-directories of cgi-bin.

I figured as much. Still I am in the middle and don't know how to proceed.
I think I have done as much as I can - short of going to Georgia (where they are located) and setting it up myself!
Any suggestions??

Your next step is to manually create the .htaccess/.htpasswd files via telnet...

Use the following HTACCESS TUTORIAL:

I don't have telnet access to the server.
So I tried to have tech support do it for me , they tried, but unsuccesfully. I went through several tech support people but none could get it to work. Finally, (at tier 3 tech support) "the unix specialist" said it was not possible.
Unless there is another way to do it, at this point I am considering either moving or forgetting the whole thing.

Well, the UNIX "specialist" needs to re-certify himself or herself...It sounds like you have made a poor choice in terms of hosting companies...

You other alternatives are the following:

1) Download and install the Admin Password Mod that is linked in numerous Threads in the Links 2.0 Discussion and Links 2.0 Customization forums.

2) Switch hosting companies.

1) Search the Support Forums for web hosts and you will find relevant Threads pertaining to this topic.

2) Search the following web site: http://www.hostglobal.com (which is linked in the Resource Center and uses Links SQL).

3) Search http://www.download.com.

4) Search http://www.webhostarea.com (also uses Links SQL and contains Host Reviews that may help you).

5) Read some articles in well-known Internet magazines.
