Little Help Regarding cgi-bin directory location
Okay,

Trying my hand at this, and unsuccesful even with this relatively easy to configure script. Can someone assist please?

I've tried two separate free hosting companies, virtualave.net and netfirms.com. Both allow cgi-bin calls and user scripts along with FTP access.

Difficulties with virtualave.net (domname.virtualave.net):

I can get the script to work, basically, as the directory structure /home/domname/html_public/cgi-bin allows placement of the cgi-bin in the html_public directory. http://domname.virtualave.net points to /home/domname/html_public.

The problem with virtualave.net is that if you click on any of the directory links displayed, even .. it will display an error message and the Address will show http:/s34.virtualave.net/home/domname/public_html/dirname while adding a trailing / to http://domname.virtualave.net/dirname/ will NOT product the error and will show the resulting directory. I recall a thread adressing trailing slashes to be added, but never saw an actual fix, if necessary.

The issue with netfirms.com is perhaps more simple:

netfirms.com places the cgi-bin directory outside of the http://domname.netfirms.com structure i.e. your directory structure appears as /cgi-bin and /www with the /www being the accessed http://domname.netfirms.com directory.

So, can it work with the cgi-bin directory outside the http://domname.netfirms.com structure? I've even tried adding a cgi-bin directory under /www so it would be within the URL structure to no avail.

I believe I've gotten closest to functionality with virtualave.com (which does actually give you the full path to your directory structure as /home/domname) but, a miss is as good as a mile. Am I making a mistake? I've played with permissions, and basically the rest of the program, i.e. changing dirs, creating dirs/files/etc. appears to work, though the .htaccess is all run together when displayed unlike the nice looking ones in the demo, so, is this me or an issue with virtualave.net and if the latter, can anyone suggest a free web-hosting company that allows user cgi-script as well as ftp access? I want to try configuring on a free server first and once I've a better understanding of things, move to a paid server.

Many thanks and sorry for the verbosity, but I wanted to hopefully include all necessary details.

Regards,

Cet.

It sounds like you may have a problem with the full path to your directories. Try downloading the script at
http://www.dotmatrix.net/scripts/setup/

It will help you find your full path to the cgi-bin as well as some other server environments.

Good luck!
