After editing a file in FileMan and then opening it in vi (unix text editor) there are these characters at the end of each line: ^M

Does FileMan need something like this: http://web.singnet.com.sg/~cslheng/tofrodos.html to sort out the format and an option for UNIX or DOS formats?

Yes, you need something like that if you are planning to work with both DOS and Unix at the same time.
