A few things about 'approving' users (by the admin).

1. a user seems to be 'not approved' standard, i.e. the admin has to 'approve'. Is there a way to automatically approve a user when they sign in?

2. a user signs up (and possibly validates themselves). The user is able to log in even though they show as not approved on the admin side.

Where are you seeing 'Approved'? Do you mean enabled/disabled?

I think I mixed up somthing.

It's the email address, which shows as 'not validated', with an 'approve' link next to it.

This means the users email has not been verified. If you don't want the user to have to verify their email, you can change this in Setup->User Signup.
