[RELEASED] Deadlink Mod 1.2
No longer freely available

Features:
1) Uses IO::Socket to verify if a link is actually dead or not.
2) Logs reports to a file and if someone tries to report the same link again, it is rejected.
3) Referer is checked each time to only allow the script to be used by authorized users.
4) Confirmation email sent to webmaster including details on the reporting.
5) Autoreponse sent to reporter thanking them for keeping the directory "deadlink free".
6) Display the number of deadlinks reported to your visitors....
There have been <Þad_total%> deadlinks reported so far! (The tag should say dead_total but the forum screws it up.)
7) View deadlink reports from your admin area and email the link owner/view link.

Please give me some feedback on what you think

I believe you mean <%bad_total%>, right? Wink

Its this friggin computer that messes all the tags up.

I hope you don't mind me using the same features as you but I didn't even realise you had created a deadlink mod.

Looks very interesting indeed, Paul! However, executing report.cgi results in a "CGI wrap error: Script file not found" message.

If you search for deadlink with All posts, you should find Threads where my old Mod was mentioned.

Basically...it provided most of the features you are providing and also integrated with the template system, which at the time, the other "bad link" mod could only be used without templates. One thing that I set-up (different from your mod) is a toggle between LWP and Socket or neither...meaning if that users had LWP installed, it used LWP, if LWP was not installed, but Socket was installed, then they could use Socket, if neither were installed, then the mod acted like the Recommend It Mod in that users simply sent a message to the admin. The first latter options were much better, but my Mod was more flexible to use user's available resources.

My mod integrates with the template system too.

All pages you see are pulled from the templates directory by report.cgi.

Re: LWP - i may look into that.

Yes...it was...but I REMOVED all my modifications (including SendLink, DeadLink, Different Category Layout, etc.) due to the following reasons:

1) I have upgraded most of my database driven apps to LINKS SQL.

2) I do not have time to support the Modifications (would rather help people in the forums, than attempt to support my own Mods).

3) I found that many LINKS 2.0 user were ungrateful and asked for more add-ons, which I attempted to do, but was met with even more ungrateful responses.

Yeah. I know how you feel. Thats why i am no longer bothering to write new mods, some Links 2 users are very ungratfull (just ask JerrySu, he had to close down his site due to one very ungratful user) Frown

@Paul:

I think many people use the one from Eliott.

And I'm one of these people who are able to install MODs themself.

And 30$ are much money. I'm only a poor student and sometimes I need help. Thanks god there are nice people like Nicky that are helping out (Nicky helped me to install the ALtavista MOD) for free.

Sorry Roger. I'm not one of those coyotes that only wants to have MODs and are crying for more MODs. I'm only a student with no money.

And if it helps you, I'll install your MOD. =) Great work =)

'Is $30 too much?'

No $30 for an install (as and when required) sounds reasonable.

Good Luck!

@Paul:

As glennu said, for installation it is ok. You have the work with installing the MOD to the peoples engine.

For selfinstalling people it will be nice when it is free.

A suggestion: Make a downloadscript where users must provide a correct emailadress and a valid url to their engine or website. The name must also be included.

After it is confirmed that this site exists and the one that fill out the form is owning this site you can provide them a email with the downloadlink.

Or you ask for a link to your site. If you have any 88x31 buttons, I'll put them everywhere on my site.

It's not so, trhat I only want to have MODs a live like a vampire and suck. At the moment I'm working on a template and a MOD for Links 2. For installation I'll take money, too. But who ever wants the MOD can have it for free.

Ok, talked to much [bleep!] for today. I'm sleepy, it's 0:00 here in Germany and tomorrow I would like to finish my MOD.

Regards

Michael

Thanks Glennu - I thought $30 was pretty cheap myself but no-one seems to want it. Mad

It was a great feeling when I finished it and it was all working but it is a bit of an anti-climax when no-one is interested.

As thomas mentioned, he is using the MOD at:

http://www.japanreference.com

And I have totally re-wrote the "Mod" for LINKS SQL v.1.13 that does not involve the user at all...due to spamming...I have integrated the URL check codes (via LWP) in my jump.cgi script.

As far as I can see it is not easily possible for my mod to be spammed.

You can't report the link if it is active or if it has already been reported and also you have to be a valid referer so the security is pretty tight.

I'm sure it is not totally fool proof but it is no easy feat trying to abuse my mod.
